War Palace and Knee Pillow: Austria’s Destiny

"Let others wage war; you, fortunate Austria, shall marry." As the saying goes, what Mars grants, Venus can bestow as well. The smoke of the Napoleonic Wars has cleared, yet the Vienna System, once the bedrock of European peace, now stands riddled with cracks. Beneath a deceptively calm surface, undercurrents swirl in an era poised on the brink of storm. The air is thick with steaming sweat and choking black smoke. At elegant dining tables, military officers and portly men in suits jostle for position, feasting greedily on the world carved up before them. Above them hangs Van Gogh’s self-portrait, while the waltzes of the Strauss family linger in the air. Suddenly, the music shifts to a martial march, and the scene transforms into a battlefield. Soldiers march in precise formations toward walls of machine guns and barbed wire. A shell strikes the ground, and as the smoke clears, cavalry charges toward the artillery positions. Amidst the deafening roar, a steam-powered tank spews tongues of fire. A wooden aircraft skims low over the terrain, dropping its bombs before pulling up sharply, piercing through the clouds into the radiant sunlight above.
