Kurogane Hayate's life takes a dramatic turn when her injured twin sister, Nagi, requires her to attend school in her place. Unbeknownst to Hayate, this school is home to the prestigious Swordswoman League, where students engage in Duels for Stars with their partners, known as shinyuu, to earn prestige, wealth, and power. Upon her first encounters with her new classmates, Hayate is met with a mix of intimidation and awe, from the formidable Student Council President Amachi Hitsugi and her ally Miyamoto Shizuku to the hot-headed but highly skilled Mudou Ayana, who fights solo without a shinyuu. Initially, Hayate hopes to avoid participating in the Duels for Stars, but her plans are upended when she returns to the orphanage she cares for to find it in ruins, leaving her with no choice but to join the fray.
