Kemuri no Mukou ni Koe ga Kikoeru

Nestled in the scenic hot spring town of Yugawara, a short distance from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, Mitsuru Kadono operates a modest handyman service. By trade, he tends to overgrown gardens, guides visitors through the town's tranquil streets, and dispenses practical advice to those in need. Yet beneath this unassuming exterior lies an extraordinary gift—one that manifests with every cigarette he lights. As the smoke curls upward, Kadono gains the ability to perceive the unspoken thoughts and hidden anxieties of the people around him. These whispered inner voices color his daily interactions, allowing him to recognize the truths his neighbors dare not voice. Whether he is pulling weeds for a troubled homeowner or offering a seemingly casual word of guidance to a lost tourist, Kadono subtly weaves these overheard secrets into his quiet acts of service. He never exploits this power, instead using it to shoulder the community's silent burdens with a gentle, stoic presence. With each exhale, he continues his reflective routine, a solitary figure surrounded by drifting smoke, listening deeply to the heartbeats of his town while never revealing the source of his uncanny understanding.
