Fool Night

In a distant future, the sky has become a permanent ceiling of thick, unyielding clouds, snuffing out the sun entirely. Without sunlight, the planet’s flora has withered to dust, and the atmosphere grows perilously thin with oxygen. On the brink of total collapse, humanity engineers a desperate salvation: transfloration, a radical procedure that slowly transforms a living human being into a plant, capable of generating a meager but vital supply of breathable air. But this salvation comes at the ultimate price—the slow surrender of one's own body and consciousness—raising harrowing questions about sustainability, consent, and the very definition of human life. Caught in this moral crucible is Toshiro Kamiya, a man already suffocating under the weight of his own existence. With a terminally ill mother whose medication costs far exceed his meager wages, and bills that devour what little remains for food, Kamiya stands at the precipice of hopelessness. Each day is a desperate calculation between prolonging his mother's suffering and his own dwindling will to endure. When the promise of a substantial financial payout for undergoing transfloration presents itself as his only viable recourse, he finds himself staring into an abyss of impossible choices. Resigned to sacrifice his future for a chance to buy his family's fleeting present, Kamiya steps toward the operating table, only to discover that the true horror of his decision lies not in losing his body, but in witnessing just how far a dying society is willing to stretch its fading humanity to survive another day.
