BEAST COMPLEX

BEAST COMPLEX is a collection of short stories set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, where creatures of every kind must confront the delicate challenge of living alongside species other than their own. Each entry in the anthology offers a self-contained glimpse into this society, capturing the quiet tensions, misunderstandings, and rare moments of connection that emerge when beings shaped by different natures are forced to share the same space. Rather than following one continuous narrative, the volume unfolds as a series of intimate vignettes, each centering on characters whose lives brush against the boundaries separating them from others. Through these encounters, the stories explore the frictions of a world where difference breeds suspicion, yet where understanding can still take root in the most unlikely of places. The result is a tapestry of everyday struggles rendered with nuance and emotional depth, revealing how fragile—and how meaningful—true harmony between species can be. Marking Paru Itagaki's debut as a manga creator, BEAST COMPLEX stands as the first showcase of her distinctive storytelling sensibility, demonstrating a sharp eye for social dynamics and a gift for uncovering profound drama in the gap between those who struggle to understand one another.
