A year has passed since Guts abandoned the Band of the Hawk and Griffith was taken into custody by the Kingdom of Midland on charges of treason. Under cover of darkness, the fugitive mercenary band is set upon at their hidden campsite by Bakiraka assassins under the command of Silat. Just as defeat appears imminent, Guts reappears from his solitary sojourn. "You destroyed everything," he is told. As Casca weeps that Griffith is rendered helpless without Guts, the two are united in both body and spirit. Meanwhile, Griffith remains confined within the Tower of Rebirth, the most ancient structure in Wyndham Castle.
