Summary

Translated Details

In the hierarchical world of Alcia, every citizen's social standing and very identity are dictated by a single, omnipresent metric known as the "count." For young Hina, however, these numbers mean little compared to the desperate quest her missing mother left behind. Armed with nothing but her mother's cryptic final words, she traverses the war-scarred landscape in relentless pursuit of a singular figure: the Ace, a fabled warrior whose exploits during the great Waste War elevated him to the status of living legend. Each new town offers a flicker of hope, yet the hero she seeks remains stubbornly out of reach, forcing her to press onward through a world obsessed with numerical worth. Her determined journey takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Licht, a vagrant who conceals his face behind a ridiculous mask and carries a count so absurdly negative—minus nine hundred and ninety-nine—that it seems almost a cruel joke. Boastful, obsessed with women, and entirely unpredictable, he embodies every trait that a hero should not possess. His clownish demeanor and lecherous antics paint the picture of a worthless drifter, the polar opposite of the noble Ace Hina has sworn to find. Yet, as she is reluctantly drawn into his chaotic wake, the uncanny glint behind his mask and the rare flashes of lethal competence suggest that his true nature is far more complex than his abysmal count or buffoonish behavior would imply, hinting that the legendary hero she seeks might be standing right before her eyes.
