Himi is just another overworked office drone, drowning in the soul-crushing monotony of corporate life. His only coping mechanism is a quiet, oft-repeated mantra: "I want to die." It's a harmless release valve for his stress, a whispered wish he never expects to be granted. That is, until the day it is answered, and he finds himself summoned from his mundane reality to a realm between worlds. There, he meets his summoner: a young, timid, and deeply unprepared death god named Mei-san. It is her first day on the job, and her inaugural assignment is to orchestrate a deadly game for Himi and a group of other souls. However, overwhelmed by her own shyness and a critical lapse in concentration, she accidentally fumbles the ritual. The prisoners she was meant to detain are inadvertently set free, and Himi, along with his newfound freedom, is sent tumbling back to his own world. Now, Mei-san is left with a monumental error to correct. Her divine superiors will not tolerate such an egregious failure, so her only recourse is a humiliating one: she must descend to the mortal plane and attach herself to the source of the problem. The new, uneasy reality for both is that the god of death has become the uninvited, permanent houseguest of a man who can't stop wishing for her to take him away, throwing both their existences into a bizarre and tense cohabitation.
