Hong Kong Films: Infiltrating Hung Hing, My Nine Bosses Die First

Gao Shen transmigrates into a world of Hong Kong crime cinema, becoming a low-level "Four-Nine" operative undercover inside the Hung Hing triad. His first problem? Nine of his handlers drop dead in rapid succession. Earning the instant moniker "Boss Killer," Gao swears on his noble character—this really wasn't his doing. His original plan was to lie low and go legit until the 1997 handover. But when he and the hot-tempered gangster Bright Kun find themselves fleeing from enemies with blades swinging, a system awakens: the [Universal Synthesis System]. A broken black-and-white TV plus color film stock yields a "Miss Hong Kong Special Color Television." A tattered boxing manual plus a stack of cash grants "Master-Level Muay Thai." A black suit plus ordinary steel plates becomes "Dragon-Scale Bulletproof Suit." A toy gun plus a toy magazine produces a "Silenced Black Star Pistol." Skills, gear, weapons—anything can be synthesized, as long as he pays the price. From buying out a scrapyard to founding Kowloon Resource Development, then building a nightlife empire that sweeps across the territory, Gao Shen creates his own business juggernaut. Others join the underworld to fight over turf; Gao joins only to rake in money. At the chairman election banquet, a reporter asks: "Mr. Gao, is it true that your rise was built mainly on violence and bloodshed?" He replies: "I'm a businessman—fighting and killing just ruins the harmony." A pause, then he adds: "I only kill them first, then finish the job."
