The film is a charming and slow-paced portrait of Japanese rural life. The story is set in 1958 (Showa 33). A university professor and his two daughters move into an old house near a forest because his wife contracted tuberculosis and was recovering in a nearby hospital. His daughters discovered "coal shit" and they were also known as "coal shit ghosts". The second son chased a little chinchilla, which led her to find the forest guardian "My Neighbor Totoro". The second son was fascinated by them and determined to find the giant chinchilla. One rainy night, when the girls were waiting for their father, they met a giant chinchilla who was using leaves to keep out the rain. When the second son wanted to bring a ripe corn to his mother in the hospital, but got lost, Caozi looked for her everywhere, and finally went to Totoro for help. And with its help, Mei was quickly found. The cat bus summoned by Totoro takes Caozi and the second son across the countryside to visit their mother in the hospital.
