China Girl

To his colleagues, Kamijou is the very picture of success—a sharp, unflappable problem-solver whose quick thinking and steady hand make even the most chaotic office crises seem trivial. Away from his desk, he finds himself perpetually pursued by a parade of admiring women, their attention as relentless as it is unwanted. Yet for all his appeal and capability, Kamijou’s heart is fixed on someone who barely seems to notice him: Xianglan, a quiet Chinese immigrant who works the floor of the local neighborhood restaurant. By day, she moves between tables with a gentle efficiency, her world confined to the warm clatter of plates and the scent of soy and garlic. To her, Kamijou is simply a familiar customer—polite, regular, and unremarkable. The language barrier stands between them like a glass wall; her halting, uncertain Japanese reduces his every attempt at conversation to a muddle of polite gestures and missed meanings, leaving her sweet but puzzled smiles as his only reward. He longs to bridge that gap, to find the right words that will finally make her see him as more than just another order of dumplings. But each visit ends the same way: with a gracious bow and a cheerful goodbye that holds no promise of tomorrow. As Kamijou walks home through the neon-lit streets, he is left to wonder whether his usual confidence has finally met its match. Can sheer persistence break through the silence between them, or will his unspoken affection remain forever lost in translation?
