Saturn Return

Kaji Ritsuko has built a life around words, yet the pages before her remain stubbornly blank. As a writer of short stories, she has always found solace in capturing fleeting moments, but now even that refuge has closed its doors. Then, without warning, the past reaches into her present. In the fragile space between sleep and waking, Aoi appears—the friend she once trusted without reservation, the one with whom she shared her deepest fears and unguarded thoughts. His ghostly presence poses a single, piercing question: *“Your life… is that really it?”* The query lingers like smoke, unsettling and unresolved, until reality intrudes with brutal clarity the next morning. A phone call shatters the silence, bringing news that Aoi has taken his own life. The weight of his death forces Ritsuko to confront the quiet, sprawling landscape of loss she has spent years ignoring—the faint echo of a dream she long abandoned, the steady rhythms and quiet fractures of her present-day relationship, and the unbearable finality of a person who was once irreplaceable. For so long, she has kept her gaze fixed forward, refusing to acknowledge the grief trailing behind her. But Aoi’s final act, and his haunting question, refuse to be dismissed. Now, as the ordinary and the profound collide, Ritsuko finds herself pulled into a reckoning with every absence she has ever avoided, and the life she has settled for may no longer be enough.
