At thirty-one, Uramichi Omota has already mastered the art of smiling through gritted teeth. By day, he is the face of a beloved children’s morning program, leading energetic youngsters through calisthenics alongside a perpetually furious singer and two colleagues lumbering around in oversized forest-creature costumes. He answers earnest questions about growing up with the same cheerful grin, demonstrates stretch routines with practiced enthusiasm, and generally performs the role of the ideal big brother for a nationwide audience of toddlers and their trusting parents. Behind the bright studio lights, however, that smile curdles into something far more weary. Uramichi is exhausted—not merely in the physical sense, but in the bone-deep, existential way that comes from being a thirty-something adult fully aware of life’s cruelties.
