This collection of interwoven narratives explores the complex bonds between four pairs who hover on the edge of romance. Akiba, a pianist, finds himself reminiscing about Yahiko, a friend with benefits whose affection is freely given yet remains unlabeled as love. Sado and Nakajo share a contentious closeness that mimics a relationship, but Nakajo’s belief that he can never truly have Sado drives him to remain by his side while actively seeking reasons to resent him. Shibata, an persistently forward older man, pursues Sekiya, a socially awkward radio DJ who struggles to articulate his turbulent inner emotions despite his polished on-air persona. Finally, Kameda and Ogikawa are brought together by a stray cat, spending their days eating, drinking, and caring for their pet in a comfortable companionship they refuse to define as love.
