Himitsu: Top Secret

By the 2060s, Japan has brought a controversial scientific marvel to fruition: the MRI System. This neural-scanning technology can extract and reconstruct the visual memories of a deceased individual, provided their brain is harvested within forty-eight hours of death. From mundane recollections to the harrowing final seconds of consciousness, nothing remains hidden. Unsurprisingly, such invasive power has been met with intense public unease, leading to its severe restriction; only a specialized police division, Section Nine, is legally permitted to deploy the system, and solely for untangling the most complex or sensational criminal cases. Freshly assigned to this elite unit is Aoki Ikkou, a promising but inexperienced recruit who initially recoils at the ethical weight of sifting through the deceased's most private thoughts and buried fears. Yet, as he finds his footing among his seasoned colleagues and grows increasingly impressed by his brilliant, unflappable superior—Maki Tsuyoshi—Aoki's proficiency sharpens, and a fierce professional pride takes root. However, his mounting dedication to the job comes at a cost, straining his relationships with family and his romantic partner as the grueling hours accumulate. More troubling still is the enigma of Maki himself: a man of icy composure and exacting control, yet clearly haunted by shadows Aoki cannot ignore. As their mentor-student dynamic deepens, Aoki finds himself inexorably pulled toward the murky abyss of his boss's past, sensing that the very technology they wield may be inextricably tied to the demons Maki fights to conceal.
