Summary
Official Details
On a distant, desolate moon, the remnants of humanity have long since scattered, leaving behind a strange and beautiful new order. The Earth is now home to the Lustrous, immortal crystalline beings who shimmer with the hues of precious gems. Though ageless, they are not without peril; from the sky descend the Lunarians, ethereal moon-dwellers who seek to shatter the gems and carry their fragments away to be mounted as ornamental trophies. Each gem must take up arms to defend their existence, yet for Phosphophyllite—the youngest and most brittle of them all, whose hardness barely rivals that of chalk—the battlefield remains a forbidden dream. Frail and prone to chipping, Phos is deemed unfit for combat and relegated to a task far beneath their ambitions: compiling a comprehensive natural history of their world. What begins as a tedious chore, however, slowly unravels into something far more significant. While researching, Phos encounters Cinnabar, a solitary gem whose toxic, corrosive mercury emissions have forced them into a lonely exile on the night shift, patrolling the shores where no other can safely tread. Bound by their shared sense of uselessness and isolation, Phos recognizes a kindred spirit. Yet Phos’s hopeful schemes to find Cinnabar a meaningful role collide with the older gem’s deep-seated resignation. As Phos dives deeper into the encyclopedia project, the mundane work of cataloging the world becomes an unexpected catalyst, forcing both gems to confront their own fragile identities. In a society where worth is measured by resilience and combat prowess, Phos’s quiet quest to document the past may prove to be the key that unlocks a future for them both—if their brittle form can endure the weight of that journey.
