In a ritual that occurs every twelve years, during the year of the Rooster, the nian monster Saiu and the divine beast Shinyu engage in battle. However, the key to defeating Saiu, who invades the human world in search of food, lies in keeping his stomach full. Shinyu diligently prepares a feast for his archenemy, only to be met with Saiu's tardiness. When Shinyu scolds Saiu for his late arrival, he unwittingly pushes the normally docile nian monster to his limits, triggering a drastic change in Saiu's demeanor and appetite, with chicken becoming the unexpected target of his hunger.
