Joo Jae-Yeol is thirty-nine years old, and by every measure that matters to him, life has passed him by. He scrapes by as a part-time lecturer at a university, a position that offers neither security nor respect, while nurturing a second, unseen identity as a writer whose work the world has never acknowledged. As the people around him settle into stable careers and steady lives, Jae-Yeol watches the ambitions he once held so fiercely slip further out of reach, and the growing anxiety of a life that refuses to stay on track begins to bear down on him. He tells himself that persistence will eventually be rewarded—that recognition, success, and a meaningful breakthrough are still waiting somewhere ahead. Yet the years keep accumulating, and the gap between the future he envisioned and the present he actually inhabits only widens. Then, one day, a death changes everything. That single, unexpected event shatters the stagnant routine Jae-Yeol had resigned himself to, becoming the turning point he never saw coming and setting his life on a course he could never have imagined.
