Summary

Official Details
At thirty years old, Yoshio exists in a state of suspended animation. Unemployed and utterly withdrawn from society, his days bleed into one another within the confines of his childhood home, a monotony broken only by the shifting shadows of daylight and the hum of his computer. Life has become a gray, featureless loop—until a peculiar package arrives at his door. Inside is an unassuming copy of *The Village of Fate*, a experimental simulation game boasting visuals so breathtakingly lifelike that they seem to belong to another world entirely. Assuming the role of an unseen guardian deity, Yoshio is tasked with quietly observing and influencing the daily lives of the inhabitants in a struggling frontier village. What begins as a curious distraction quickly becomes an obsession, however, as the villagers behave with an unsettling depth of intelligence, emotion, and spontaneity. They mourn their dead, celebrate their harvests, and react to his interventions with a complexity that no algorithm should be able to produce. Their struggles feel achingly real, their joys palpable, planting a dangerous, hopeful thought in Yoshio's mind: what if these pixelated souls are actual living people, existing somewhere beyond the screen? As he invests more of himself in their survival and prosperity, Yoshio finds the boundaries between his desolate reality and their vivid world beginning to blur. For the first time in years, he feels a pang of purpose and a flicker of warmth, discovering that by caring for the fragile lives in his care, he might just be saving the one he has long abandoned.
