Shiki

In the isolated village of Sotoba, a small traditional Japanese community surrounded by death, a mysterious and deadly epidemic begins to unfold. The village, whose primary industry is crafting grave markers from the surrounding fir trees, is plagued by a series of unexplained deaths, with some residents living alongside the rotting corpses of their family members for weeks before being discovered. As the death toll rises, the village doctors initially suspect a new disease, but soon, they witness the deceased returning to life, walking among the living under the cover of night. The story of Shiki masterfully blurs the lines between good and evil, presenting a tale without clear protagonists or antagonists, where two sides are driven to survive in a desperate, deadly environment, raising questions about the nature of morality and what it means to be evil in the face of unimaginable horror.
