Nine Peaks

Mashio Gaku has barely settled into his new school when a run-in with a third-year student earns him a suspension within his first week. He returns home to his father’s okonomiyaki shop, only to be met with disapproval. His father, Mashio Harumi, cannot hold back his scolding and outright refuses to serve him. Those bitter parting words prove to be their final exchange—shortly after, Harumi is killed in a tragic traffic accident. At the wake, Gaku discovers that his father was, by his own blunt admission, a very big deal. Overwhelmed with grief, Gaku goes fishing, seeking solace in the familiar pastime he and his father once shared. But when he hooks something massive and is yanked into the water, he loses consciousness. Upon waking, he finds himself staring into the face of a stranger who feels strangely familiar—and realizes he is standing in the year 2000.
