Leaping Over the Cliff

Lin Fan is a quintessential 1980s-born man. He didn't enter the civil service system, works as a planning executive, and is married with children. The pressures and reprieves from his wife, child, finances, mortgage, and car wrap around him like a tightening headband, yet his inner pursuit of an ideal never ceases. During a family seaside vacation, he stumbles upon an unremarkable cliff face behind a small coastal village—a spot nobody pays any mind. Spurred by a wild idea, he resolves to transform this cliff, as ordinary as he is, into a one-of-a-kind hotel. Carrying this near-mad dream, Lin Fan withstands his family's bewilderment and the jeers around him, embarking on a Quixotic journey to make it real. From a stroke of luck that lands him on a televised program, to encountering all manner of people from all walks of life, the question remains: can Lin Fan, determined to stake everything on this cliffside hotel, truly see it through to completion? Through extensive inner monologue, this work vividly portrays the life of a standard 1980s-born individual who feels underappreciated and unable to break through—a sentiment sure to resonate with peers of the same generation.
