Rift: Descent of the Otherworld

When the sky tears open, the first sensation is not fear, but a profound, piercing cold. It is not the chill of winter air, but a bone-deep dread that strikes even within the safety of a familiar apartment. The heavens have fractured, bleeding an emerald green light like luminous paint burning through a ceiling, its edges flickering with a blue glow unmistakable to any veteran gamer. After six years of playing a pure ice mage, casting enough frost bolts to circle Stormwind one and a half times over, he recognizes this radiance as genuine arcane energy, not mere digital effects. Dust motes hang suspended in the air, drawn toward the ethereal light, as something ancient awakens within him. Energy surges through his veins and unseen meridians, flowing from his heart to his fingertips without incantation or gesture. A coin-sized ice crystal materializes in his hand, guided by muscle memory etched into his very bones from countless hours behind a keyboard. Below, screams erupt from the streets—sharp, truncated cries cut short as reality itself begins to unravel.
