Shin Yami no Koe - Kaidan

Junji Ito returns with another bone-chilling collection of nightmares, *Shin Yami no Koe - Kaidan*, weaving together seven distinct tales of terror that showcase his mastery of the macabre. The volume revisits familiar ground with the return of the mischievous Soichi, whose devilish antics take center stage in two linked narratives. *The Soichi Front* picks up directly where the earlier *Secret of the Haunted Mansion* left off, plunging readers back into that unsettling world, while *Soichi's Beloved Pet* finds the troublesome boy entangled in eerie events after his family takes in an abandoned cat. Elsewhere, a stark geographical divide breeds supernatural enmity—two villages separated by a river choose mirrors over walls, a decision that holds dark secrets about a mass disappearance from long ago. A late-night mountain drive turns into a nightmare when Shigeru encounters a blood-soaked girl by the roadside, and in a sprawling mansion crammed with ancestral tomes, Koko's husband Goro guards their literary heritage with obsessive fervor—a devotion that invites catastrophe. The collection's remaining horrors probe the unsettling corners of everyday life. *Songs in the Dark* explores the psychological torture of an endless earworm, imagining what happens when a single melody refuses to leave your head for months on end, consuming all thought. Finally, *Splatter Film* takes a grotesque turn as a group of aimless stoners discovers an irresistible honey, their addiction leading to deliciously gruesome consequences that only Ito could conjure. From cursed architecture and obsessive hoarding to visceral addictions and spectral encounters, *Shin Yami no Koe - Kaidan* delivers a full spectrum of dread, proving once again that Ito's horror lies not just in the monstrous, but in the mundane twisted into the unrecognizable.
