Born the son of a wealthy household, Jang Geon seemed fated for downfall. To reverse his fortunes, he was compelled to embrace a life of simplicity under the tutelage of a virtuous monk. Entrusted to the ascetic Gyeongmok at Shaolin Temple, Jang Geon passed his days clad in coarse cotton robes, subsisting on bland rice and little else. Even as he endured hunger and deliberately curtailed every unnecessary movement in his daily routine, he chanced upon the martial arts and unexpectedly found a way to channel his ingrained frugality into his training.
