Blue Blazes

The early 1980s marked a dynamic turning point in Japanese pop culture, as an electrifying new wave began to ripple through the worlds of manga and animation. Amid this creative ferment, a young man named Moyuru Hono burns with a singular, all-consuming dream: to become a legendary mangaka. Yet for all his fiery passion and late-night sketching sessions, he remains a figure of unrealized potential—possessing boundless drive but no finished work to his name, no debut to anchor his aspirations. As the industry around him surges forward with bold new voices and experimental storytelling, Hono finds himself caught between the weight of his own grand ambitions and the paralyzing void where his first true creation should be. This is the crucible of his youth: a raw, unvarnished era of struggle, self-doubt, and obsessive devotion to the craft. With nothing but pencil, paper, and an unshakable belief in his future, Hono navigates the chaotic landscape of aspiring artists, editorial rejections, and the relentless pressure to prove himself. Will his fervor ignite into a breakthrough, or will the blank page forever defeat him? The series, which captures this formative journey with poignant authenticity, received the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival Excellence Award in 2014. In Indonesia, Level Comics released the work in 2011 under the title *Blue Flame: Comic Bomber Early Years*.
