The Dancing Issunboushi

Adapted from Edogawa Rampo’s short story of the same name, this one-shot reimagines the classic Japanese folktale through a distinctly surreal and grotesque lens. Originally serialized in Comic Beam in March 2010 and later collected as bonus material in Suehiro Maruo’s Rampo Panorama artbook, the manga transforms the traditional narrative into a visually striking exploration of obsession and performance. The story follows the diminutive protagonist Issunboushi as he navigates a world that is both fantastical and unsettling. Faithful to Rampo’s original text while amplified by Maruo’s signature aesthetic, the tale delves into themes of identity, desire, and the uncanny. This adaptation serves as a bridge between classical Japanese literature and modern ero-guro manga, offering readers a meticulously crafted visual interpretation that honors the source material’s eerie atmosphere and psychological depth.
