Official Details

Matsukoma is a male part-time worker on the late-night shift at a convenience store. He is assigned to train a new part-time employee named Tomoharu Nii, who is nicknamed Nietzsche-sensei. Tomoharu is a university student in the Buddhism department, bringing an unexpected academic perspective into the store’s ordinary nightly operations. The story’s central conflict arises when an angry customer screams at Tomoharu, “Customers are gods.” Rather than accepting this retail maxim, Tomoharu replies, “God is dead.” This sharp exchange places Matsukoma, the trainer, beside a new hire whose philosophical instincts collide with the everyday demands of customer service. In the late-night convenience store, routine training becomes the setting for a confrontation between retail etiquette and Tomoharu’s Buddhist studies, all filtered through his Nietzsche-inspired nickname.
