Yomawari Sensei

Drawn from the real-life experiences of its author, who works as a high school teacher, Yomawari Sensei chronicles twelve years spent conducting night patrols through the streets of Yokohama City. Venturing out after dark, the educator steps far beyond the boundaries of a traditional classroom to seek out vulnerable young people navigating the city's most unforgiving environments. During these nightly rounds, he comes face to face with adolescents grappling with severe personal crises. The youth he encounters are struggling with harrowing challenges ranging from self-mutilation to drug abuse, often left entirely without guidance or support systems once the sun goes down. Rather than turning away, the teacher immerses himself in their struggles, confronting the harsh realities that threaten to consume their lives. Through these raw and unflinching encounters, the story highlights the profound divide between the structured world of formal education and the chaotic, desperate situations many students endure outside of school hours. It stands as a powerful testament to one educator’s unwavering commitment to reaching those who have fallen through the cracks, offering a sobering look at the hidden battles fought by young people in the shadows of the city.
