Summary

Official Details
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Edo's historic Yoshiwara red-light district, *Edo Karuta* is a compelling anthology of short stories, each intricately linked to a traditional karuta card. The collection explores the lives, struggles, and fleeting hopes of its characters through four distinct narratives. In "Kimori Okuma," a kind-hearted young woman named Okuma faces relentless public ridicule due to her weight, leaving her unable to find a husband until a compassionate samurai steps in to defend her honor. Meanwhile, "Kanrobai" follows Asagi, who falls into reduced circumstances after her father commits ritual suicide. Clinging to her former high-class demeanor only invites bullying from her coworkers, leaving her desperate for a way back to her old life alongside nothing but mistreatment and the peculiar company of a strange man trapped beneath a barrel. The remaining tales delve into equally poignant emotional landscapes. "Maigoishi" centers on Tama, a lost child temporarily sheltered by a family with a son named Shirou. Though she longs to reunite with her beloved father, discovering where she truly belongs proves far more complicated than she anticipates. Finally, "Akaishinyo" portrays Seiichi, the sole protector left to guard his princess, Miya. Driven by duty rather than their mutual feelings, he strives to secure what is best for her, even as he questions whether he can truly discern what that might be.
