Futaba’s life has been defined by constant movement, a reality shaped entirely by her father’s career as an oceanographer. Because of his demanding research and frequent relocations, she has already transferred to eight different schools. This relentless cycle of arriving and departing has left her with a profound sense of impermanence, making it nearly impossible for her to put down roots or feel like she truly belongs anywhere. Haunted by the fear that she will eventually be forgotten by everyone she leaves behind, Futaba has developed a quiet defense mechanism to protect herself from the inevitable pain of parting. Rather than facing another round of fleeting connections and eventual goodbyes, she resolves to keep people at a distance. Upon arriving at her newest school, she makes a deliberate choice to avoid forming any new friendships, believing that emotional detachment is the only way to shield her heart. However, this self-imposed isolation forces her into a lonely existence, leaving her to navigate the challenges of yet another unfamiliar environment entirely on her own while quietly wrestling with the deep human need for connection she is trying so hard to deny.
