Yuurei

Set against the backdrop of college life, Yuurei is a haunting psychological drama that explores the destructive nature of internalized prejudice and emotional turmoil. The story centers on a young male student whose carefully maintained world is disrupted by his intense discomfort toward a specific individual: his classmate’s childhood friend, who is openly gay. Rather than confronting his own complex feelings, the protagonist allows deep-seated repulsion to fester quietly beneath the surface of his daily academic routine. As the narrative unfolds, this unspoken hostility intertwines with profound self-loathing, creating a volatile psychological landscape for the young man. His inability to reconcile his visceral reactions with his own sense of identity traps him in an escalating cycle of fear and disgust. The tension between his outward environment and his inner distress steadily mounts, pushing him toward a breaking point where avoidance is no longer possible. Ultimately, the collision of these suppressed emotions yields devastating results. What begins as quiet aversion spirals into a deeply unsettling sequence of events, culminating in tragic consequences that leave a lasting impact on everyone involved. Through its chilling atmosphere and sharp focus on human frailty, the manga delivers a sobering examination of how unchecked fear and hatred can unravel lives from the inside out.
