Nanbanjin

Set against the historical backdrop of Japan’s Muromachi period, this manga follows the unexpected arrival of a foreigner from the south who washes ashore in a secluded coastal village. Rather than being met with hostility, the stranded outsider is discovered and taken in by a local father who has long been consumed by grief. This chance encounter initiates a profound and unconventional bond between two individuals from vastly different worlds, as they navigate the complexities of their unique relationship amidst the quiet rhythms of rural life. The narrative explores how mutual care and cultural exchange can foster healing and understanding in an era defined by isolation. Created by acclaimed artist Taiyō Matsumoto, the work benefits from the collaborative planning and creative input of French comic book artist Cyril Pedrosa. This international partnership brings a distinctive perspective to the historical setting, enriching the story’s emotional depth and visual storytelling while remaining grounded in the intimate human connection at its core.
