Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san

Nestled among the winding, historic streets of Kyoto's renowned geisha district, sixteen-year-old Kiyo navigates a life shaped by an unexpected turn of events. Like many young girls drawn to the city's rich cultural heritage, she arrived with dreams of becoming a maiko—an apprentice traditional Japanese performer celebrated for her artistry and grace. However, despite her earnest efforts, Kiyo ultimately falls short of achieving this coveted role. Rather than abandoning the world she has grown to love, she finds a new purpose within the very same troupe. Stepping away from the stage, Kiyo takes on the essential role of the household caterer, dedicating herself to preparing meals for the performers who continue to chase the dream she once shared. This manga chronicles the quiet charm of her daily existence behind the scenes. Far from the spotlight, Kiyo's journey unfolds through the warmth of the kitchen and the bonds she nurtures with those around her. It is a gentle, slice-of-life story that explores resilience, finding one's place, and the simple beauty of everyday routines within a deeply traditional setting.
