The Strange Wit Tale of Hanasaka Ikkyuu

In ancient times, a malevolent ayakashi roamed the land, challenging unsuspecting victims to perilous battles of wits. The stakes were absolute: those who outsmarted the spirit would be granted a single wish, but anyone who failed would have their soul devoured without mercy. For generations, none could consistently overcome the creature's cunning tricks—until the arrival of the brilliant Hanasaka Ikkyuu. Armed with an unparalleled intellect, Ikkyuu has repeatedly defeated the ayakashi, earning its grudging respect and relentless obsession. Though the ayakashi shadows his every move, ever eager for the chance to finally consume his soul, Ikkyuu views the danger as a necessary risk. By exploiting the spirit's rule-bound power, he is able to grant wishes and bring aid to those in desperate need. However, his extraordinary luck may soon face its ultimate test. When Ikkyuu encounters a distressed Yukionna—a snow fairy whose plight requires the ayakashi's specific intervention—he must wager everything once more. As the stakes rise higher than ever before, the question remains whether Ikkyuu's legendary cleverness will hold, or if his final gamble will cost him his very soul.
