Suiren Unga

Set in the newly independent Water Lotus Kingdom, a nation still reeling from British colonization and now fractured by an oligarchic regime, *Suiren Unga* depicts a society on the brink of collapse. The ruling Lakeside elite faces escalating terrorist attacks from the marginalized Water Lotus population, creating a volatile atmosphere of deteriorating public order. Amidst this turmoil lives Touka, a mixed-heritage girl who disguises herself as a boy while working at the Lake Hotel, a hub for the privileged class. Gifted with telepathic abilities that allow her to read emotions, she is dismissed after a confrontation with a customer and subsequently swept up in a violent extremist demonstration. In the ensuing chaos, Touka encounters David, a young doctor of British and Lakeside descent, before fleeing due to a misunderstanding that leads her to Rajkumar, a cyborg dancer with whom she forms a binding master-servant contract. As Touka navigates her supernatural gifts and her bond with Rajkumar, their fates intertwine with a complex web of stakeholders including Chen, a Chinese antique dealer; Senator Ma Nan; a mysterious sunglasses-wearing figure; Godot, head of the Canal Federation’s intelligence agency; Paul; and Long Wei, leader of the Suiren guerrillas. Their converging intentions drive a narrative steeped in political intrigue, identity, and conflict within a deeply divided post-colonial landscape.
