Shounen Shoujo

Shounen Shoujo is a compelling anthology of short stories by Satoshi Fukushima, spanning twenty-eight chapters united by a single overarching theme: the complex dynamics between males and females, particularly boys and girls. Each tale boldly experiments with entirely new concepts and settings, featuring a wildly diverse cast that includes young musicians, girls playing football, extraterrestrial beings, pop stars, samurai, yakuza members, elderly characters, and even cavity-causing bacteria. While many of these narratives stand alone, several are revisited across the collection, offering readers a deeper look into their unconventional worlds. The closest element to a central narrative—appearing as one episode in each volume—follows a girl named Yoshiko who is burdened by a devastating tragedy. After accidentally pushing her friend into a deep fountain, resulting in his death, she is consumed by guilt toward his younger brother, Goro. Told through shifting time periods, the story traces the fragile and uncertain relationship that develops between them as they navigate this shared grief. Despite its title, Shounen Shoujo is not intended for children; its tales frequently conclude abruptly, leaving ample room for reader interpretation.
