Offshore Lightning

Nazuna Saito began her manga career later in life, winning a newcomer award from a major Japanese publisher in her forties. After working through the 1990s, she paused her art to care for her ailing parents. In her sixties, while teaching drawing at Kyoto Seika University, she found renewed inspiration among her talented students, though her storytelling interests had profoundly shifted. Before suffering a stroke, she created works deeply focused on aging and mortality. This collection gathers both her early stories and these later graphic novellas into a single volume. Her earlier tales, such as "Buy Dog Food and Go Home" and "Offshore Lightning," center on middle-aged men trapped in cycles of self-pity and reflection. Saito gently mocks their anguish while capturing the genuine pathos of men revisiting childhood friendships and lost loves. By contrast, her later work adopts a starker tone. "In Captivity" follows three siblings navigating a road trip as they reckon with their mother's dementia, balancing the painful legacy of her caustic personality with the desire to honor her at the end of her life. Meanwhile, "Solitary Death Building" chronicles an eccentric cast of elderly gossips as death slowly descends upon their shared housing complex.
