Sayonara Alter

Sayonara Alter is a compelling manga that centers on the devastating aftermath of a funeral for an identical twin. When two girls share the exact same face, the loss of one creates a haunting and deeply unsettling mystery: which sister is truly the one lying in the casket? This chilling question forms the emotional core of the story, plunging the surviving characters into a psychological labyrinth where grief, identity, and memory blur together. The narrative explores the profound confusion and sorrow that follow such a tragedy, challenging those left behind to reconcile their love with an agonizing uncertainty. As the surviving family and friends struggle to process their loss, they are forced to confront the fragile nature of individuality when physical appearances are perfectly mirrored. Every shared memory and familiar gesture becomes a source of doubt, leaving them to wonder if they truly knew the girl who passed away—or if they even know the one who remains. The story masterfully builds tension not through external action, but through the quiet, suffocating weight of unanswered questions and fractured relationships. Recognized for its striking premise and emotional depth, Sayonara Alter was awarded the prestigious Gold Prize at the 21st Dengeki Comics Grand Prix in 2014.
