Digimon Chronicle served as the core narrative for the 2004 Digimon product line. Initially rumored to be a full-scale manga replacing V-Tamer 01, it was ultimately released primarily as prose text within booklets bundled alongside the Pendulum X digital pets. These booklets also featured brief, disconnected six-page manga segments. The story unfolded across four chapters, distributed sequentially with the Pendulum X 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 devices. The narrative centers on a Digital World governed by Yggdrasil, a sentient host computer. When rampant Digimon overpopulation triggered a catastrophic system overload known as the Digital Hazard, Yggdrasil constructed the New Digital World—divided into three temporal layers named Urd, Versandi, and Skuld—and unleashed Project Ark alongside the lethal X Program to purge unwanted Digimon. However, certain Digimon survived by acquiring the X-Antibody, which fortified them, altered their forms, and granted immunity to the eradication protocol. In response, Yggdrasil deployed the Royal Knights, thirteen elite Digimon tasked with enforcing order. Amid this escalating conflict, three humans—Kouta, Yuuji, and Shinji—mysteriously entered the Digital World and bonded with partner Digimon, including Dorumon for Kouta and Ryuudamon for Yuuji. While Kouta and Yuuji rebelled against Yggdrasil and its enforcers, Shinji seemingly aligned himself with the host computer's agenda.
