Lighthouse

Lighthouse is a one-shot manga written by acclaimed horror creator Junji Ito, produced as a promotional tie-in for the Japanese release of Robert Eggers’ 2019 film The Lighthouse. This standalone work translates the psychological dread of the original cinematic premise into Ito’s signature illustrated format. The narrative centers on two lighthouse keepers stationed on a remote, desolate island. Their isolated existence takes a harrowing turn when a violent storm strikes, cutting off all contact with the outside world and leaving them entirely stranded. With no hope of immediate rescue and nowhere to escape, the men are forced to endure their confinement together in an unforgiving environment. As the days stretch on under the crushing weight of their isolation, the fragile boundary between reason and madness begins to erode. The relentless elements and absolute seclusion gradually strip away their sanity, plunging both keepers into a shared psychological descent. What begins as a struggle for survival against nature transforms into a deeply unsettling exploration of paranoia and mental unraveling, as the two men lose their grip on reality within the confines of their island prison.
