Habataki Ein Marchen

A magnificent comic adaptation of Tatsuo Hori’s classic work of youth literature, Habataki: Ein Märchen presents a fairy tale that is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is quietly cruel. The story centers on the complex dynamic between two young boys, Jiji and Kiki, whose relationship unfolds against the backdrop of their everyday childhood games. Jiji stands apart from any ordinary mischievous ringleader; he is not only the strongest among his peers but also possesses a striking, almost ethereal beauty. With piercing eyes and delicate, shell-like lips, he effortlessly captivates everyone around him. Always trailing in his wake is Kiki, a small boy with a disproportionately large head who follows Jiji with unwavering devotion. Their playful world shifts dramatically during one fateful moment when Jiji suddenly stumbles and feigns death as part of their ongoing game. Rather than playing along with the established rules, Kiki abandons his role entirely. Overcome by genuine concern, he drops his usual demeanor and gently asks if Jiji is hurt, speaking with a tender softness reminiscent of a young girl. This poignant interaction reveals the fragile, deeply emotional core beneath their seemingly simple childhood adventures.
