Totsuku ni Touka: Bakumatsu Tsuuyaku Moriyama Einosuke

Set against the backdrop of Japan’s era of strict national isolation, communication with the outside world was a highly regulated and critical endeavor. During this period, official interpreters known as Tsuji served as essential bridges between foreign visitors and Japanese authorities. The story follows young Moriyama Einosuke, an earnest and deeply passionate apprentice striving to master the demanding art of interpretation in a time when words carried immense weight. Moriyama’s path to proficiency is far from easy. His daily life is defined by constant practice—speaking unfamiliar languages, carefully listening to nuanced exchanges, and absorbing the heavy expectations placed upon him. He endures rigorous training marked by harsh scoldings from his superiors, often finding himself moved to tears by the sheer intensity of his discipline. Yet, rather than breaking his spirit, these trials forge his resolve. Through unwavering dedication and emotional resilience, Moriyama gradually finds his footing within his challenging profession. Every hardship he faces serves as a stepping stone, transforming a devoted but inexperienced apprentice into a capable and true professional interpreter ready to navigate the complexities of a changing world.
