Daguanjia

Following the tragic passing of his mother, a young man finds his home transformed into a place of relentless hardship. Instead of drawing closer in their shared grief, the fragile bonds of his family begin to fracture under the weight of sorrow. His younger brother, rather than offering comfort or solidarity, turns against him, subjecting him to constant torment and bullying. The household that should have been a sanctuary quickly devolves into an environment defined by hostility and emotional cruelty, leaving the protagonist to navigate his profound loss entirely alone. Crafted by Tan Jiu, Daguanjia is a poignant short story that delves deeply into the painful complexities of family dynamics when faced with devastating loss. It strips away the idealized image of sibling loyalty to expose the raw, often unspoken resentments that can fester within a grieving household. Through its focused narrative, the work explores how tragedy does not always unite those left behind; instead, it can amplify existing tensions and breed unexpected malice. Ultimately, this compelling tale serves as a quiet yet powerful examination of human vulnerability, illustrating the heavy toll that familial betrayal takes on a heart already burdened by mourning.
