Children of the Whales

Chakuro serves as the dedicated archivist aboard the Mud Whale, a vast vessel that functions as the isolated home for his people. Tasked with meticulously recording their births and deaths, he approaches his work with quiet urgency. As a wielder of thymia—a unique ability that comes at the cost of a drastically shortened lifespan—he is acutely aware that his own time is fleeting. Driven by this reality, Chakuro is determined to craft a historical record far more detailed and enduring than anything left behind by those who came before him. For generations, the inhabitants of the Mud Whale have lived in peaceful seclusion, their days defined by a predictable rhythm far removed from the outside world. However, this tranquil existence is violently upended when a routine scouting expedition yields an impossible discovery. The scouts encounter a mysterious young girl whose very presence defies everything they understand about their surroundings. Far more unsettling is the realization that she possesses knowledge about the Mud Whale that surpasses even their own. Her sudden arrival threatens to unravel the carefully maintained isolation of Chakuro’s people, forcing them to confront hidden truths about their home and the fragile nature of their sheltered lives.
