Akanai Tobira

Akanai Tobira is a compelling short story collection exploring unexpected romantic connections and shifting dynamics. In the opening tale, Usui once ignored his shy junior Masuoka during their college years, despite the younger man’s obvious crush. Now working as Usui’s assistant, Masuoka remains timid, yet his alluring scent constantly attracts unwanted attention from others. As trouble follows them, the question remains whether Usui is truly unaffected by Masuoka or simply waiting for the right moment to act. Another narrative follows Tayama, who spent high school overshadowed by the popular Tachibana—even the girl he admired only spoke of him. Reunited in college, Tachibana unexpectedly claims Tayama as his closest friend. While fending off Tachibana’s admirers proves exhausting, Tayama finds himself far more troubled by his own deepening emotions. A companion piece later revisits this relationship through Tachibana’s distinct perspective, revealing new layers to their bond. The final story centers on Takeo Muraoka, who has quietly admired a beautiful, reserved store clerk for months. When Takeo finally gathers the courage to speak to him, he is stunned to receive a sudden kiss. As Takeo discovers that the object of his affection is far different than he ever imagined, he must determine whether genuine love can still blossom between them.
