Satou Kashi no Dangan wa Uchinukenai

Nagisa Yamada is a pragmatic junior high school student living in the remote, rural town of Tottori. Having lost her father years ago, she watches her mother work a series of part-time jobs just to keep their household afloat. Grounded firmly in reality, Nagisa dreams only of graduating as quickly as possible so she can finally step out on her own and take control of her life. Her quiet, predictable routine is upended by the arrival of Mokuzu Umino, a melancholic and deeply enigmatic transfer student who seems entirely detached from the ordinary world around them. Mokuzu makes an extraordinary claim: she insists she is a mermaid who has come ashore on a singular mission to find a true friend before a looming storm arrives. Despite the vast differences between Nagisa’s grounded realism and Mokuzu’s fantastical assertions, the two girls form an unlikely and profound bond in the quiet isolation of Tottori. Together, they navigate the complexities of their unique friendship, doing everything in their power to simply keep living against the weight of their circumstances.
