The Change!

Set against the elegant backdrop of Japan's Heian era, The Change! follows the unconventional lives of two siblings born to a noble chief councillor of state. From an early age, both children harbor a deep-seated desire to belong to the opposite gender, setting them apart from the rigid expectations of aristocratic society. Lady Kira possesses a strong and willful disposition, displaying traits traditionally associated with young men of her station. In stark contrast, her brother, Lord Kira, is a delicate and beautiful boy whose gentle nature aligns more closely with the feminine ideals of the court. Recognizing that their inherent temperaments defy conventional roles, their father makes the extraordinary decision to raise them contrary to their birth sexes. Lady Kira is brought up as a boy, navigating the world of male nobility with her natural fortitude, while Lord Kira is nurtured as a girl, embracing the refined grace expected of highborn ladies. This deliberate exchange shapes their identities and places them at the center of a unique social experiment within the imperial court. The manga is a faithful adaptation inspired by Torikaebaya Monogatari, a classic novel originating from the late Heian period that explores these very themes of identity and transformation.
