Toki☆Meka marked Naoko Takeuchi’s return to manga after a nearly four-year hiatus, debuting as a one-shot in the September 2001 issue of Nakayoshi. Although the original publication included a note inviting readers to request a continuation, Takeuchi soon shifted her focus to an unrelated project titled Love Witch. The story centers on Mimii and her childhood friend Hoshiko, who shared a close bond before Hoshiko departed for the United States to study abroad. Before leaving, Hoshiko made Mimii promise that they would remain friends forever. Driven by this vow, Hoshiko spent years working toward creating the perfect robotic companion. Seven years after their farewell, a robot girl named Meca suddenly appears in Mimii’s life, fulfilling Hoshiko’s promise by stepping in as her new friend and helper. However, Meca proves to be far more unpredictable than Mimii ever anticipated. Rather than offering quiet companionship, the energetic android constantly stumbles into chaotic situations. Using a specialized cellphone capable of summoning various people, robots, and objects, Meca repeatedly finds herself rescuing others from danger, turning Mimii’s everyday life into an extraordinary adventure.
