There is no Batman in Gotham City comics.

In the desolate and forgotten Wayne Manor, overgrown with weeds, lies the abandoned Batcave. Despite the passage of twenty years since Bruce Wayne's tragic fall in Crime Alley, Gotham City has seen little improvement. The Joker's gruesome visage may be wiped clean, but the young Penguin still plots his schemes, and Harvey Dent remains fixated on dismantling Maroney's gang. The world is a hauntingly realistic and terrifying place, bereft of the fantastical elements that often shape the lives of its heroes. Perhaps this is what makes the story of "Bloody Mary" so unsettling – its focus on the brutal and unapologetic nature of villainy. Without the embellishments of supernatural powers or mutants, the world is a darker, more unforgiving place. And it is here, amidst the chaos and despair, that a new kind of hero will emerge: a "heretic" Batman, forged in the depths of this unrelenting urban jungle.
